SCAD posts wins over Montreat, Brenau

SAVANNAH, Ga. –
The Savannah College of Art and Design softball team swept a split doubleheader over Montreat College and Brenau University Sunday (Feb. 7) afternoon at the Paulson Softball Complex.

The 23rd-ranked Bees took the opener over Montreat 10-2 in six innings as SCAD collected 14 hits against the Cavaliers. SCAD hit two home runs as the Bees recorded a 4-1 decision over Brenau in game two.

SCAD improved to 3-1 and will return to action Friday (Feb. 12) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga.

Every SCAD starter collected at least one hit in the Montreat win as the Bees scored in every inning but the second. Jessaca Spears led the way with three hits while Carleigh Shannon, Jaime Voelkel and Candle Pfefferle had two each.

Lisa Williams (1-1) allowed just hits and struck out eight to earn the win for the Bees.

SCAD took a 1-0 lead as Pfefferle led off the third inning with a home run to left field. It was the freshman’s first collegiate homer in her career. The Bees expanded their advantage to 3-0 as Courtney Mienkina hit a two-run homer to center. It was her second home run of 2010.

Sam White (2-0) only allowed three hits and struck six to pick up the SCAD decision.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.
Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
